"If you're always looking at someone else’s life, you’ll miss the beauty in your own."

Have you ever looked at someone and thought, “I wish I had their life”?In a world dominated by filtered perfection and highlight reels, comparison is an invisible thief—stealing our joy, our peace, and even our identity.

This simple story of a crow’s journey to find happiness will gently remind you of something powerful we often forget gratitude is the key to freedom.

The Crying Crow

Once upon a time, under the calm shade of an old tree, sat a lonely crow. His feathers were dark as midnight, but his heart felt heavier than stone. As he looked at the world around him—so bright, so colorful—he couldn’t help but cry.

Beneath that tree, a wise monk sat in deep meditation. A single tear from the crow landed softly on the monk’s cheek, waking him from his thoughts. Surprised, he looked up and saw the crow sobbing.

“Why are you crying, little one?” the monk asked gently.

“Oh wise one,” said the crow, “my life is full of pain. People hate me. They chase me away, throw stones, and never feed me. I’m ugly, unloved, and unwanted. Death would be better than this miserable life.”

The monk listened quietly, his heart filled with compassion.

A Magical Offer

“My dear crow,” said the monk, “joy comes not from what we have, but from how we see it. Still, if you truly wish to change, I can help. I can transform you into another bird—but first, you must speak to a swan and ask if he is truly happy. Come back and tell me what you learn.”

The crow’s eyes sparkled with hope. He spread his wings and took off into the sky.

The Swan’s Secret

At a serene pond, the crow found a swan gliding gracefully over the water.

“You are so beautiful,” said the crow. “Your feathers are as white as milk. Everyone loves you. Surely, you must be the happiest bird in the world.”

The swan sighed. “I once believed that. But now, I look at the world filled with color—and I feel dull. My white feathers are plain. I think the parrot must be the happiest bird of all.”

The Caged Parrot

The crow flew to meet a parrot perched inside a golden cage.

“Oh parrot,” he said, “you are so vibrant and beautiful. You must be the happiest bird alive.”

The parrot replied, “I used to be. But people keep me in cages. I can’t fly free. I’m always afraid someone will grab me and lock me up. If you ask me, the peacock is the happiest—he’s more beautiful than I’ll ever be.”

The Sad Peacock

The crow finally reached a zoo and found a peacock surrounded by people. When the crowd left, he asked, “Dear peacock, everyone comes to see you. You are admired by all. Surely, you must be the happiest bird on earth.”

The peacock looked at him with weary eyes. “Because of my beauty, I am trapped here. People pluck my feathers for decoration. It hurts… and I can never fly free. But you, crow—you are not in a cage. No one tries to trap you. I’ve watched you flying freely, and I’ve thought: if only I were a crow.

Realization and Return

Stunned, the crow flew back to the monk.

“Oh wise one,” he said, “I don’t want to be a swan, a parrot, or a peacock. For the first time in my life… I’m happy to be a crow. I am free. And I am enough.”

The monk smiled and nodded.

The Lesson

We live in a world that constantly encourages comparison. We look at others’ lives and think they have it better—more beauty, more wealth, more happiness. But we don’t see their hidden struggles.

We envy their blessings without understanding their burdens.

Happiness is not in becoming someone else. It's in loving who you already are.

If we keep comparing ourselves, we’ll never be content. But when we choose gratitude—when we embrace our uniqueness and accept our flaws—that’s when freedom begins.
